How Peering Works

Exchange Traffic Directly, Skip the Middleman

An internet exchange is where networks hand traffic straight to each other instead of paying transit providers to carry it. Virtual Peering puts you on the exchange without a physical port.

To peer you bring your own AS number and your own IPv4 or IPv6 address space. They are your network's identity on the internet, and peering only works because you own them. Don't have them yet? We help networks through the APNIC process all the time.

From there we do the heavy lifting: a virtual circuit from your existing service onto the exchange fabric, and BGP sessions to the route servers where we advertise your prefixes on your behalf, or hand you the keys if you would rather drive. Your traffic then flows directly to every network that peers, off your transit bill.

What do we need to peer?

Two things: your own AS number and your own IPv4 or IPv6 addresses, plus a record of what you advertise. If you do not have them yet, we can help you apply through APNIC, which usually takes a couple of weeks.

How does the BGP side work?

Once the connection is up, we set up sessions with the exchange and with any networks you peer with directly. We can manage the routing for you, or hand it over and let your team run it.

Why peer instead of just buying transit?

Peering sends traffic straight to the other network instead of paying someone to carry it. That means a lower cost per megabit, a shorter path, less delay and more control over where your traffic goes.

Do we need a physical port at the exchange?

No, that is the point of virtual peering. We already hold ports at the exchanges; a virtual circuit over your existing Managed Networks service connects you to the fabric as if you were there, typically with a 1 Gbps allocation per service.

Can we peer at more than one exchange?

Yes. Many networks peer at two or three fabrics for redundancy and reach. Each exchange is its own virtual service over the same underlying connectivity, so adding a second is straightforward.
